The Ivory Lane boardwalk provides the link for cyclists and pedestrians to and from the Story Bridge/Bowen Terrace, City Reach and New Farm Riverwalk. The existing elevated timber structure had deteriorated and required replacement. The new boardwalk provides a more durable, wider walkway for pedestrians and cyclists with the use of fibre composite technologies.
The scope of works included:
The team faced numerous challenges to complete the walkway replacement project due to the confined access and steepness of the site, located in a narrow easement between hotel and apartment buildings. The existing walkway and old, dry stacked boulder wall had to be carefully demolished. A temporary pile wall, soil nails and shotcrete were then installed to retain the bank while access was created below for the structural foundations. The fibre composite walkway structure was prefabricated and transported to site in four spans before being craned into place.
Due to the surrounding hotels and apartments, working hours had to be limited and vibration monitoring was undertaken to ensure the impact of the project was minimised as much as possible.
